Membership information
Liberal Judaism in the North West
MEMBERSHIP RATES AND BENEFITS 2009-10
Full Membership
Full membership of MLJC is available to:
adults over 18, resident in the North West of England who are Jews by matrilineal descent (Jewish mother) or patrilineal descent (Jewish father) who have had a Jewish upbringing or who are Jews by conversion to Judaism, as defined by the Rabbinic Conference of Liberal Judaism.
Full Members are entitled to vote at General Meetings of the Community, may propose motions for consideration by the Annual General Meeting and the Executive Council, and can stand for the Executive Council.
Associate Membership
Associate membership is open to everyone: Non-Jewish partners of members of MLJC, Non-Jewish parents of Jewish children, former members of MLJC no longer resident in the North West, Non-Jewish supporters of MLJC, Jews who are members of other Jewish congregations, members who can only attend infrequently and do not wish to pay the full membership fee, and to Proselytes on a recognised conversion course.
All members benefit from:
The pastoral care of the Rabbi and officers of the community.
Membership of Liberal Judaism.
Subscription to LJToday, MLJC newsletter, and e-mail bulletins.
Access to the Members Area of the community’s website.
Notification of all services and events of MLJC.
Free or reduced rates of admission for High Holy Days, Communal Seders, and other events held by MLJC.
Enrolment of children in Cheder.
Inclusion of Yahrzeits in the Community Calendar.
Celebration of marriage, mixed-faith blessing or same-sex commitment ceremony; Funeral service; and (for children of members) Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and Kabbalat Torah.
Right of burial in Agecroft Liberal Jewish Cemetery, Salford.
Partners of full members (Jewish and non-Jewish) may also be buried in Agecroft Liberal Jewish Cemetery, Salford at the discretion of the Council of MLJC in consultation with the Rabbi.
Jewish dependent children of members over 18 and under 22 benefit from the same membership status as their parent(s).
Concessionary rate is available to members who are unwaged, and to young people under 25.
Proselyte Rate is higher to help cover the cost to the community of the conversion course.
Gift Aid Rate For taxpayers the membership fees can be reduced because, as a registered charity, MLJC claims back the rest of the fee from the tax office as tax paid on charitable donations. Every £1 donated is treated as net after tax from £1.25 (£1.25 - 20% = £1). MLJC gets back the 25p. To allow us to do this members must complete a Gift Aid Donation Form. If members do not wish to participate in this or would rather claim the tax themselves they must pay the full rate.
Note: MLJC does not run a burial scheme and members are advised to make their own arrangements to cover the cost of the funeral.
